Chen Yi Quan (陈亿全)

Chen graduated from the National University of Singapore with a degree in Psychology. He became a full-time artist in 2015.

The artist is most well-known for his colorful paintings of a Southeast Asian flavor – a blend of laissez- faire aesthetics with figurative elements derived from the psychological mechanism of automatism, hallucinations. Recurring motifs include boats, the sun and moon, trees and dwellings reminiscent of villages of old (kampongs) as well as the façade of shophouses characterized by Chinatown of the sixties. The artist sees a continuity from the past to the present while at the same time expresses the idea of the juxtaposition of the two, an idea made possible only through art. With regards to technical aspects, as a self taught painter, he infuses into the acrylic medium the philosophy behind Chinese ink paintings, with particular emphasis on the color black, and consequent forms, strokes and outlines.
